Panel of CCS experts

No government or company wants to waste money building a low efficiency, high cost, capture plant. Governments in most democratic countries live on four- or five-year cycle of holding power. A CCS plant may last 30 to 40 years so it is easy to see why a government is not excited about helping incentivize CCS facilities. A government would make sure that the public wants these CCS operations before they risk investing or incentivizing CCS. To not spend money, generates many arguments of why spending money on CCS is a poor idea. What I have seen change in the last two years is a bottom up need to apply CCS, either from the public or companies looking for help from their governments. I have also seen where a board of directors for a company will make the decision to go a zero-emission target by a certain date. Companies are becoming “Green” by choice seeing not only is it the right thing to do but the companies and public will buy their products as a matter of choice.

There are many people who have worked tirelessly in the CCS industry. Most CCS savvy individuals, work for companies that are looking at CCS opportunities or simply understand the progress of CCS as it works through barriers that prevent large scale implementation. Many times, these individuals retire or leave from their companies and their voice is no longer heard. I am looking forward to collaborating with these experts so their talents are not lost and their experience can be pooled to advise governments or companies on the positive or negative effects of CCS for each need.

There needs to be cross pollination of skills to make the full chain of CCS work. I have seen for example, cement plants in Asia that are interested in capturing carbon but did not know there maybe saline reservoir storage near their plant. Many capture projects have no clue about storage, and many storage experts know very little about capture systems. Linking up the two processes, capture and storage with good solid regulation policies and incentives will drive deployment of CCS.
